The 2004 Hundred Acre Port, made from the same vineyard, is a candidate for the finest fortified wine ever made in California. It is that special. Dense purple with gorgeous roasted coffee, chocolate, and blackcurrant aromas as well as a hint of scorched earth, it is unctuously textured, but possesses spectacular balance and precision. This is a tour de force in winemaking. Expect it to drink well for 15-20 or more years. It’s an astonishing effort!

The extraordinary 1997 Cabernet Franc is impressive. A massive, mountain-styled offering (unlike other California Cabernet Francs, with the possible exception of La Jota\'s), it boasts an opaque purple color as well as a fabulously sweet nose of black currants, cranberry liqueur, new oak, and roasted notes. Chewy, full-bodied, and exceptionally huge, this offering should become even more complex with another 5-6 years of cellaring. It should keep for two decades. This is a tour de force, particularly for Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020.
This is a spectacular wine that must be tasted to be believed.

I loved the penetrating aromatics and floral, blueberry, and menthol notes of the deep ruby/purple-colored 2002 Cabernet Franc. The blend is actually 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot. The flamboyant fragrance jumps from the glass of this sweetheart of a wine. There is tremendous concentration and intensity of flavor, yet the wine is light on its feet, with a surreal, ethereal flavor profile. Cabernet Franc can do some special things in California, and it is good to see this wine perform so well. Already drinkable, it should last for 10-15 years.

Although little is made, Pride Mountain produces one of California's finest Sangioveses. The 2000 Sangiovese includes 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. A classic tobacco leaf, leather, strawberry jam, and black cherry-filled character is found in this medium-bodied, terrifically fruity, rich yet structured Sangiovese.

The greatest northern California Sangiovese, the 2001 Sangiovese blows away its competition. Strawberry jam, tobacco leaf, plum, and fig characteristics skip and hop to the beat of a large orchestra in this bottle that is available only in 500 ml formats. Drink this knock-out 2001 over the next 5-7 years. It will make anyone believe that Sangiovese as well as Merlot are not always the great red wine rip offs of California.
