The 2006 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard is a brilliant effort. One has to admire Aubert’s ability to turn out something of this majesty in such a challenging year when so many Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards were filled with botrytis. Lemon blossom, orange marmalade, and white currant aromas jump from the glass of this light straw-colored cuvee with a greenish hue (a characteristic that also appears in the Aubert 2007s). Beautiful notes of tropical fruits and crushed rocks are present in this gorgeously rich, full-bodied, well-focused Chardonnay. All the Aubert Chardonnays offer abundant power, vivid acidity, and dramatic, laser-like focus.

Even greater acidity is present in the 2008 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard. The tightest, most backward of this quartet, it exhibits surprisingly high acidity as well as remarkable concentration and extract. Again, it reveals a liquid minerality intertwined with citrus oil, orange blossom, and brioche notes. Like its siblings, this sensational white wine should last for a decade or more.

|
Made from an old Wente clone, the 2004 Chardonnay Quarry Vineyard offers notes of lemon oil, crushed rocks, white peaches, and a hint of orange blossoms in a full-bodied, gorgeously textured, super-fresh format buttressed by terrific acidity. This stunning Chardonnay should drink beautifully for 4-5+ years. This Chardonnay tends to be aged in 100% new oak (which is totally concealed) and is bottled without fining or filtration. Consequently, if it has just been shipped or moved, it can reveal a slight haze.

Made from a suitcase clone apparently smuggled in from the Montrachet Vineyard (as vineyard myth has it), there are 350 cases of the 2007 Chardonnay Reuling Vineyard, which possesses the most fabulous minerality of any California Chardonnay. Its steely backbone as well as its extraordinary depth of white currants, nectarines, quince, and honeyed citrus are both provocative and lingering. Full in the mouth, with outstanding acidity, this 2007 has the potential to be one of the half dozen or so finest Chardonnays ever made in California.

From a vineyard that seems to do well no matter who is making the wine, the 2004 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is tropical fruit-dominated with classic California notes of creme brulee, roasted pineapples, hazelnuts, brioche, and plenty of spice. It’s a stunningly full-bodied, exotic, in-your-face offering with terrific underlying acidity. This savory, fresh, vibrant, well-delineated white should last for 7-8 years. This Chardonnay tends to be aged in 100% new oak (which is totally concealed) and is bottled without fining or filtration. Consequently, if it has just been shipped or moved, it can reveal a slight haze.

The blockbuster 2000 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard (produced from an old Wente Chardonnay clone) is an intensely steely offering with extraordinary texture, ripeness, and weight, with a liquid minerality, phenomenal precision, and a sensational finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds ... remarkable for a dry white. It possesses a floral note intermixed with the minerality and citrus fruit aspect so prevalent in this vintage's finest wines. Enjoy it over the next decade.

The light gold-colored, full-bodied, intense 2004 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch (2,700 cases) displays evolved fruit notes in the nose (waxy peaches, honeysuckle, and wood). The showiest, most flamboyant of these 2004s, it requires consumption over the next 3-4 years.

The 2006 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is structured and tannic, with more acidity, and a leaner, more backward personality than the Durell Vineyard, with a chalky character. White currant, hazelnut, and wood spice notes are present in this medium to full-bodied white.

One of my favorites is the flamboyant 2007 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard. Incredible fragrances of honeysuckle and tropical fruits as well as caramelized oranges and nectarines offer thrilling aromatic fireworks. Full-bodied, with terrific purity and a layered mouthfeel, this is a stunning Chardonnay that should come into its own in 1-2 years and last for a decade.

The 2003 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard has a Corton-Charlemagne-like personality. Notes of acacia flower, stone fruits, liqueur of rocks, some orange blossom notes intermixed with apple skin, and hints of hazelnut and lemon butter are all present in this full-bodied, stony, mineral-dominated wine that is undeniably impressive. Again, it is backward, but there is an inner core of concentration that just goes on and on. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

|
The 2007 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard reminds me of a Corton-Charlemagne with its notes of white peach, unbuttered popcorn, honeysuckle, and that liqueur of crushed rocks. This dry-farmed vineyard planted with old Wente and Mt. Eden clones (the preferred choice of Steve Kistler and his sidekick Mark Bixler) has produced a full-bodied, powerful, mineral-dominated wine with great acidity and a long finish. With almost a tannic structure superimposed on the enormous fruit, this wine should drink well for at least a decade.
