Hint of alcohol on the nose together with fairly high-toned, pure and incredibly complex and elegant raspberry fruit. The medium weight flavors are sweet and quite intricate displaying grand cru richness and stupendous length. Delicious now and while there are still some tannins to resolve on the finish, this is approaching its apogee. In a word, stunning and yet another in a long line of great Rousseau Chambertins.

Dark, bright red. Multidimensional, soil-driven nose features wild red berries, smoke, minerals, dried rose, mocha, underbrush and an exhilarating suggestion of white flowers. Like pure silk in the mouth but with pungent mineral lift giving this voluminous, extract-rich wine a nearly weightless impression. As fat, full and solid as this is, the overall impression is of finesse and perfume. Finishes with extraordinary mounting persistence and perfectly buffered, noble tannins.

A stellar wine, the 2002 La Romanee sports a gorgeous nose of violets, roses, spices, raspberries, and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, it is super-ripe, wonderfully elegant, fresh, pure, and exhibits an exceedingly long finish. Great velvety waves of candied red, bing, and black cherries dominate this decadent (yet refined) gem’s personality. Its tannin is perfectly ripe, sweet and syrupy, rendering the wine seamless and sensual. Wow! Projected maturity: 2009-2020.

Claude Dugat Charmes Chambertin |
Burgundy Red |
TZ95 |

$390.00 |
|
Full red-ruby. Superripe, highly complex aromas of dark cherry, coffee, mocha and minerals, all lifted by a floral topnote that I did not find in any of Dugat's other '05s. Dense, sweet and superripe but with lovely perfume and freshness to the dark fruit flavors. A whiff of menthol and a sappy quality give lift to this 300-pound ballerina. Rather open today in the mid-palate, but surely this will shut down in the bottle soon. Finishes broad, fruity and very long, with no sign of heat.

Full red. Flamboyant aromas of musky blackberry, black cherry, spices, mint and peony. Rich, chewy and deep; not hugely sweet but fresh, highly concentrated and solidly structured. Intriguing hint of blueberry on the palate and aftertaste. Finishes with big, dusty tannins and excellent length.

Deep, bright red-ruby. Perfumed, fruit-driven aromas of black cherry, cassis, raspberry and flowers. Full, sweet and deep, with impressive volume and breadth. Began a bit closed in the middle, but opened to show a wonderfully lush texture. Finishes very long and fresh, with dusty, even tannins and solid structure. This is all Musigny, from the estate vines less than 25 years old. The best value in the cave

Full red-ruby. Dense, laid-back nose hints at cherry, raspberry, powdered stone, mint and flowers. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then supple and subtle in the middle, with excellent density. Finishes very long, with fairly strong but fine tannins and some noticeable oak.

Prepare to be transported. A positively brilliant nose of violet and rose petal shines against a background of intensely spiced extravagant red and black pinot fruit nuanced by hints of earth and stone and this minerality continues onto the surprisingly supple flavors that convey a remarkable sense of energy and power on the almost unbelievably intense, focused and structured finish that seems to go on and on without end. And the '05 VV has what all truly great burgundies have which is that extra dimension of power without weight as this carries terrific punch and power yet delivers that explosiveness with impeccable class and grace. While I am duly mindful of the many legendary wines this domaine has produced (see the database for all vintages reviewed dating to 1919), the 2005 could very well join the list of the all time greats, there is really that much potential here. Whether it will ultimately transcend the heights achieved by the 1919 or the 1949 (among many others) remains an open question, I have zero doubt that 2005 will be a genuinely great vintage for this wine. Brilliance personified and absolutely a 'wow' wine, in fact, this merits a double 'wow'.

Good deep red. Reticent, pure aromas of dark fruits, minerals and flowers. Superripe, suave and minerally, with a penetrating quality to the flavors of black cherry and currant. Hints at the peppery, herbal quality of the year but finishes very long, with fine tannins. In contrast to the estate\'s Echezeaux holding, this parcel is in a protected, very warm spot.

The sort of fabulous Pinot Noir that quickens a wine lover's pulse. Pretty amazing: Dark in color, it starts out reserved then hits high gear with loads of lush, ripe, sweet red- and blackberry flavor. Fine tannins and a long finish. My guess is grand cru Burgundy.--Pinot Noir Challenge. Drink now through 2020. –PM

The dark ruby-colored 1999 Grands-Echezeaux has gorgeous talcum powder, perfume, and candied cherry aromas. The 2003 La Tache reveals aromas of milk chocolate, violets, roses, and dark cherries. Suave, displaying massive amplitude and a full-bodied, velvety-textured character, this behemoth’s flavor profile brings to mind chocolate-covered black cherries. Immensely powerful and noble, it offers an interminable finish that is packed with flawlessly ripe, sweet tannin. Projected maturity: 2013-2030.

The DRC produced splendid wines in 1990, and the Richebourg is close to reaching its plateau of maturity. A dark ruby color reveals lightening at the edge. The stunning aromatics offer intense aromas of spring flowers, black fruits, licorice, and toasty new oak. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied, with a velvety-textured palate, and sweet fruit, this smoky, rich, complex red Burgundy can be drunk now and over the next decade.
